LGBTQ Depth Psychotherapy

Do you live outside of the heteronormative-cisgender-binary categories that we are all indoctrinated into living?

Have you been impacted by the oppression of systemic privilege?

Have you experienced traumatic effects from having grown up in a homophobic, bi-phobic, transphobic family and community that, for example, impact your capacity for emotional openness, intimacy, and trust in relationships?

Have you been to other supposed “LGBTQ-friendly” counselors who had no idea what you were talking about? Or they focused on helping you to “fit in” to the oppressive majority?

Could you use a safe space to process your feelings and assess your goals?

Or maybe you’re seeking relationship counseling from someone who really understands the relationship issues specific to LGBTQ+ individuals?

If you can relate to any of the above, then there’s a good chance that I can help you.

A central focus of my practice is on the identification of the oftentimes multiple oppressions that individuals experience and the impact of that oppression, such as trauma and internalized homophobia, bi-phobia, and transphobia that impairs LGBTQ individuals’ emotional and behavioral functioning. Therapy focuses on depthfully exploring and working with one’s trauma and self-hatred as it shows up in one’s life and relationships today.

Another especially important focus central to my practice includes working towards the liberation of our gay/lesbian/bi/trans spirit, and in exploring the inherent value and meaning of each individual’s sexual and/or gender identity as experienced by that individual.

Over the past 20+ years I have assisted individuals of various self-identities in exploring their inner world and in addressing the trauma they experienced in their upbringings, what I refer to as part of their “unfinished family business” from childhood, and uncover how the psychological internalization of their parental figures continues to impact them from within today. As healing from that trauma begins, the focus then can broaden to include a depthful exploration of the meaning of the individual’s self-identity, ways to further liberate one’s spirit going forward, and developing a stronger connection to one’s soul. I have found it crucial in this work with my clients to have “walked this talk” myself by having actively engaged in my own depthful trauma work and to be ongoingly engaged in Gay-Centered inner work, so that I can better realize my own Gay Spirit and effectively guide you through this typically difficult process.

As an LGBTQ+ therapist, I am committed to helping clients of all genders, sexual identities and expressions feel not only safe but truly respected, and to help you truly feel your own inherent value. I specialize in working with gay men and lesbians through a depth-oriented Gay-Centered Psychoanalysis that assists individuals in overcoming the psychological impact of the oppressive and traumatizing homophobic environment in which we are raised, in enhancing one’s connection to Gay/Lesbian Soul, to the enlivening and inspirational Gay/Lesbian Spirit within, and in differentiating a Gay/Lesbian Self. I have found this depthful approach to be equally effective with individuals with various self-identities.
